Event
Info
About 70
children from various childcare centres serving economically disadvantaged
families danced, sang and acted their hearts out in a Nature Adventure at
MacRitchie Reservoir.
First
organised in December 2005 by The Arts House, the BT-BAF Arts Camp is a
three-day activity that aims to create a fun environment for young children to
be exposed to different genres of the arts (in visual arts, music and movement)
and be engaged in the creative thinking process. In line with the objectives of
the BT-BAF, the Arts Camp is organised twice a year and serves as a platform
for talent-spotting as well.
Following
the successful collaboration in May 2007, BT-BAF and NTUC Childcare
Co-operative Ltd invited children from the various NTUC Childcare centres to
participate in this exciting Arts Camp that exposed the children to visual
arts, drama, singing and dance.
Community
Partners Ms Nicole Stinton and her team from Short & Sweet, as well as Ms
Laura Soon and her team from Plastique Kinetic Worms, took the children through
the art of making nature-themed visual art exhibits and put together a
performance scripted by Ms Nicole Stinton, titled Lost in MacRitchie Reservoir. BT
BAF volunteers also played key roles supporting this production, helping to
play the lost children, and leading the children in song, dance and script.
The
performance on 19 December 2007 was graced by Ms Clara Lim-Tan, Deputy
Chairperson of the BT Budding Artists Fund, Mr. Colin Goh, General Manager of
The Old Parliament House Ltd and Ms Ho Yin Fong, Deputy CEO of NTUC Childcare
Co-Operative Ltd.
The
parents of the children also turned up in full force to support the hard work
of the BT BAF beneficiaries and all were treated to a magic show at the end
featuring Captain
Amazing & His Superhero Friends! from Mighty Magic
Factory. The children and parents laughed at the puppets, gasped at the
illusions and relished the twisty animal balloons and dinner provided.
Says
Hiqmah, one of the BT BAF volunteers, “The experience was simply superb; I got
to learn first-hand skills and tips on theatre performing, work with
experienced theatre performers and other polytechnic/university students and,
handle many energetic, lively kids all at once. I realised after 3 days of
having to tolerate mischievous, loud, moody and profusely sweating children,
that I really do love kids!”
Concurs
Siti Suhara, another BT BAF volunteer, “volunteering is a really great way to
meet/ work with new people who, more often than not, share the same kind of
ideals. (…) I actually learned that with the arts, when you approach something
totally new, you need an open mind. You need to release your inhibitions and
appreciate something for what you think its worth, not what somebody or
something else brands it to be worth.”
We
certainly hope more people will feel that way and warmly welcome all who would
like to volunteer or contribute to BT BAF.
