Review - The Little Arts Academy’s Open House Date: 21 -23 November 2008
Time: 11am - 5pm
Venue: The Little Arts Academy
What a journey!
From an earnest desire to help children afford training in the arts 3 years ago, The Business Times Budding Artists has certainly grown and blossomed in many ways. As part of our Opening ceremony on 18 November, Mr Edmund Cheng, Chairman of the National Arts Council was brought back to the launch of The Business Times Budding Artists Fund through a ceremony that fused the past with the present and reminded all that The Little Arts Academy (LAA) builds on the work started with The Business Times Budding Artists Fund in providing equal opportunity for all children to be fully engaged in the arts through long-term, multi- and interdisciplinary arts training programmes in music, dance, theatre, visual arts, new media and culinary to nurture and develop the talents of children between five and 12 years of age.
Says Annie Tung, 15, from Dunman High School, “My four days at The Little Arts Academy Open House was totally fun and memorable. It was definitely an enriching and fulfilling experience. I not only had the chance to get to know different groups of people and their working conditions, I also discovered my skills, talents and interests in this field by participating in various roles.”
The LAA Open House reached out to more than 160 beneficiaries from various non-profit organisations including Canossaville Children’s Home, Caterpillar Club, Care Corner Family Service Centre and Student Care Centre (Admiralty), Child @ Street 11, Children-At-Risk-Empowerment Association, City Community Services, Henderson Community Centre’s We Love Learning Programme and NTUC Childcare Cooperative. The children attended workshops ranging from hip-hop, to theatre, percussion, STOMP, podcasting, ballet, bag painting, woodblock painting and culinary arts. To check out some of our students’ podcasts made during out Open House, please visit http://littleartsacademypodcast.blogspot.com/
In the culinary class, children got to try their hand at baking a gorgeous bread and butter pudding under the watchful instruction of chef Shan and Noorlizan from The Raffles Culinary Academy. For the recipe, please visit http://muxmag.mobrick.com/users/14/issues/10
The children also participated in a bag design competition visitors to The Little Arts Academy could vote for their favourite bag! Visit http://www.flickr.com/photos/24572906@N05/sets/72157605260853031 for a peek of our young fashion designers’ bag paintings.
Finally, the children participated in an LAA Project Runway show where children made their most fashionable designs from recycled materials and modelled them for the audience.
All this would not have been possible without the help of 21 student teachers from NIE who valiantly helped us organise the non-profit organisations, publicise our workshops and even teach some workshops themselves. Check out their blog at http://littleartsacademy.blogspot.com/
From painting to baking to podcasting, The Little Arts Academy (LAA) is an interdisciplinary creative space, which aims to discover and develop artistic talent, build confidence and nurture compassion in every child through the arts. Look out for our Discovery Programmes in 2009, your child will have a whale of a time discovering and learning through the arts.
